tobacco for your ears

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

it’s saturday night. you got off work, took out the trash, caught up on a few episodes of buffy and finished that bag of cheezy-puffed-snacks you’ve been saving for just the right occasion. now, you find yourself sitting there, grafted to your snuggie and caught in that ol’ familiar state of existential doom recognizing your life, and all, for that matter, is devoid of any objective purpose and you’ll never find true love.

you may never find true love, but occasionally you will find good music; i just did. on a very rare trip to the record store, with rich, i discovered an artist known as tobacco. apparently, he’s more well known for being the frontman(?) for a band called black moth super rainbow, but i’ve never heard of them prior.

the album i stumbled on, “fucked up friends“, is one of the best cds i’ve heard in a while. and, though similarly painted with glitch, synth and heavy beats, far more polished than the noise i’ve been discovering lately. it’s hard to describe but it’s at once totally fresh and nostalgic. i’ve found i have a certain affinity for that these days; experimental, lo-fi, almost tape-quality tracks and tobacco, and even some of the bmsr i heard are right up that alley. also worth noting: there’s a killer track on this album featuring one of the most respectable mc’s i’ve heard, aesop rock.

anyway, i’m a terrible music critic and hardly a writer so i can’t really do it justice, but this album kicks ass. you can check out most of the tracks between their myspace and last.fm, and some of their videos remind of some of my favorite trs-80/ratatat videos… enjoy if you’re interested. and let me know if you stumble on anything similar; always looking for new music.

noise wizard

one of the best things the internet has been doing for me these days is helping me find new music. though, i have to admit, as i’m cycling through a bands page and looking at who they like, or who other people that liked them also recommend… sometimes things take a pretty weird direction.

i realized today that i’m diggin this music i think some refer to as, justly, noise. a lot of experimentation, synth… lots of beeps and glitch. though some would argue this band is the best example, i’d just say they’re probably one of the most well known: crystal castles. i also just stumbled on an artist who coincidentally sourced//co-conspired a couple of ‘cc’s songs: health. health is based out of los angeles and though some of their stuff is just fucking crazy, i’m really stoked to have found them.

one other artist i found on that same tangent: narctrax. check em out.

in shop related news rich is in san diego for the week, but we have a new hood from innes we’ll be posting asap. also, i believe the shipping cutoff to make it in time for the holidays is december 19th for usps and ups, so if you’re planning on buying a gift keep that mind.

good to be back

sorry about the delays. first, i totally dropped the ball on getting the other two innes tees up before thanksgiving. just had too much on my plate for that day and had to hit the road to head north and lost track of my todos. and before i knew it, i awoke in buenos aires for a week or so i’ll not soon forget. perhaps i’ll share some photos soon, but for now, enjoy this video. it’s like 10:00pm and feels like 4:00am for me and i can hardly keep my eyes open. it’s good to be back.
