it’s saturday night. you got off work, took out the trash, caught up on a few episodes of buffy and finished that bag of cheezy-puffed-snacks you’ve been saving for just the right occasion. now, you find yourself sitting there, grafted to your snuggie and caught in that ol’ familiar state of existential doom recognizing your life, and all, for that matter, is devoid of any objective purpose and you’ll never find true love.
you may never find true love, but occasionally you will find good music; i just did. on a very rare trip to the record store, with rich, i discovered an artist known as tobacco. apparently, he’s more well known for being the frontman(?) for a band called black moth super rainbow, but i’ve never heard of them prior.
the album i stumbled on, “fucked up friends“, is one of the best cds i’ve heard in a while. and, though similarly painted with glitch, synth and heavy beats, far more polished than the noise i’ve been discovering lately. it’s hard to describe but it’s at once totally fresh and nostalgic. i’ve found i have a certain affinity for that these days; experimental, lo-fi, almost tape-quality tracks and tobacco, and even some of the bmsr i heard are right up that alley. also worth noting: there’s a killer track on this album featuring one of the most respectable mc’s i’ve heard, aesop rock.
anyway, i’m a terrible music critic and hardly a writer so i can’t really do it justice, but this album kicks ass. you can check out most of the tracks between their myspace and last.fm, and some of their videos remind of some of my favorite trs-80/ratatat videos… enjoy if you’re interested. and let me know if you stumble on anything similar; always looking for new music.
